Vocabulary Manager (Endorsed)

Vocabulary Manager is a multimedia vocabulary learning tool; like an electronic flash card system with audio. VM allows you to create a database of vocabulary items with an image and two audio recordings (one for a 'citation' form and one for the 'in context' form) for each item. As you build the database, you can practice the words, and test yourself in terms of comprehension, production, and spelling. When you want to share the database and audio and picture files, the program will package it up for easy sharing. The new users can then easily modify the database to meet their own language learning needs.
This version of Vocabulary Manager runs only on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Vista. An older (now obsolete) version will also run on any Windows 95, 98, or ME system. Contact the support email address if you want that version. This version supports Unicode encoding, as well as (some) Legacy encodings, but no support will be given for problems with Legacy encodings.
Legacy encoded language databases can now converted to Unicode using the “SILConverters for Office” program, which is part of SILConverters 2.6 or newer. See the Unicode Encoding Conversion topic in the Vocabulary Manager tutorial for details.
Vocabulary Manager is designed to use Keyman 5 and 6 for entering orthographic and other representations of data. A tutorial is also provided which gives instructions on basic user and developer procedures. Note that Vocabulary Manager 5.8 will work with Keyman 5 or 6 on Vista. Keyman 7 may be used, but automatic switching of keyboards is not supported.
Supported image file formats are: .jpg, .bmp, .avi, .mpg, and any other picture or video format supported on your machine by DirectX 8.1. Supported audio file formats include .wav and .mp3.
Vista users
For Vista users, you should install this program from an Administrative account (as opposed to a Standard User account--even if it has upgraded Administrative privileges).
Also, if you want to create an Install Set of your language database to give to someone else (see help), you must run Vocabulary Manager "As Administrator". You can do this by right-clicking on the file C:\Program Files\Vocabulary Manager\VocabMgrU.exe in Explorer and choosing the "Run as Administrator" option.
