Linguists have not discerned problems of creation of national languages. New nations need help in molding their languages, which now have many variants that divide, "so that these languages not only become an integrating force in society but also an adequate vehicle for communication and progress in the outside world." Standard language needed for

• official pronouncements
• correspondence, and
• education.

Need standardization of spelling and modernization of vocabulary. Modernization needed "to adjust the concepts, ideas, and ways of thinking of their culture to the concepts, ideas, and ways of thinking of the modern world through the coining of new words or terms." Process of standardization and modernization is different for each country. Explores aspects of process in the Malay language.
