Summary

Addresses the problem of functional illiteracy among adolescents of the United States. Examines results of case studies of successful "reading programs which refuse to tolerate an acquiescence to the inevitability of reading failure" (page vii). Characteristic of successful programs is the

  • strong belief (held by teachers and administrators) in each student's right and ability to learn to read
  • emphasis on the importance of literacy, and
  • large proportion of time given to reading and writing.

Goal is "to help students have a good experience with a book." Highlights "special findings" (pages 168-178) with

  • in-depth descriptions
  • three in-school programs
  • three after-school programs, and
  • two summer programs.

All illustrate innovative, successful ways to reach out to young adolescents with literacy needs.

Evaluation

Is based on research by the Center for Early Adolescence. Provides successful models for teaching adolescents to read. Is recommended for

  • reading specialists
  • classroom teachers
  • administrators
  • public librarians with commitment to literacy programs, and
  • libraries of colleges and universities with education schools.
