Davis, Patricia M. 1987. "What we have learned about learning." In NOL Special Issue 3 (1987):1–10.

Summary

Presents two main ideas: learning is conditioned by student's expectations and learning strategies. (Lists traditional learning strategies in Australia and in Amazonia.)

Concludes that concepts different from Western tradition affect teaching and learning processes. Traditional learning strategies precondition students to certain learning patterns. Many minority group students are not accustomed to making generalizations. Effective educators

  • identify and accommodate to student's conceptual framework
  • apply traditional strategies
  • explain and demonstrate new strategies and concepts, and
  • allow time to internalize procedures.

Traditional strategies must gradually complement new techniques by teaching students how to

  • think analytically
  • make generalizations
  • understand new time and number concepts, and
  • best apply these.
