• Transitions between paragraphs
• Highlighting by means of comparison
• Description by telling the effect or result
• Use of direct quotes to highlight the "peak" of a paragraph or article
• Direct quotes for describing feelings

Outlines suggestions for leading writer candidates into an awareness of

• their own language
• its alternative devices for expression, and
• its natural units.

Helps writers develop a working vocabulary for discussing language and writing devices.
