Dawson, Jean. 1985b. "Training writers: Evaluation and self-editing." Notes on Literacy. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Guides mother tongue writers in revising their own work. Helps trainers when they do not know the discourse structure of the language well enough to evaluate a piece by the standards of that language. Recommends that writers do self-evaluation in groups of two or three that speak the same mother tongue language. Part 1 states that effective writing should

  • be coherent
  • be complete
  • have no extraneous material, and
  • be written in a natural style for a specific audience.

Part 2 discusses ways to self-edit and self-evaluate. Suggests

  • criteria
  • reasons for poor quality, and
  • how consultants can help.
